Jay Heaps is the new coach of the New England Revolution, the MLS team he played nine seasons for as a defender.
He was appointed Tuesday to succeed Steve Nicol, who left Oct. 24 after 10 years as coach in what the team described as a mutual parting.
The 35-year-old Heaps was the MLS rookie of the year in 1999 with the Miami Fusion. In 2001, he joined New England where he ended his career after the 2009 season. With the Revolution, he was among three players to start in all four of the team's MLS Cup appearances. The Revolution lost all those league title games in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. They missed the playoffs the past two years.
Heaps is the Revolution's all-time leader with 243 games and 238 starts.
