New York Yankees: Luis Severino Is Building Confidence in Bullpen

The New York Yankees have been on a miracle run since the trade deadline. Despite trading their great relievers, their bullpen has been strong.

When the New York Yankees traded Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller, and Carlos Beltran, everyone believed their season was over. Despite not having three of their best performers from the first half of the season, the Yankees have found ways to win.

One of the reasons for the success has been because of the bullpen still. Due to the expanded rosters, the Yankees have been able to use a lot of different arms in September to help make up for their struggling pitching staff. After a really poor start to the season as a starting pitcher, Luis Severino has found success in the bullpen.

“I’m hitting the glove,” said Severino, who hasn’t given up an earned run in any of his seven relief outings. “Earlier, I wasn’t doing that. I was missing a lot of pitches. Now I’m more focused.”

One of the most glaring differences for Severino has been his improved fastball. Severino has frequently been close to having his fastball approach 100mph. This increased speed has clearly made a difference for Severino.

“Coming out of the bullpen, I’m learning a lot of tough situations,” Severino said to Dan Martin of the New York Post. “I’m not letting the pressure go to my head.”

As a young pitcher, Severino is learning how to pitch in different situations out of the bullpen. After having his confidence rattled to start the season, Severino is certainly regaining now that he is having success in the bullpen.

“We need it to continue as we move forward here, but it should give him confidence,” Girardi said to Martin. “He’s been really effective there, so he should be gaining confidence.”

Furthermore, having Severino pitch well out of the bullpen is helping the Yankees win games this season. In addition to him helping this season, Severino can also be building his confidence back up to rejoin the rotation next season. Finally, Severino is part of the reason for the Yankees’ bullpen having success, but the ultimate goal has to be to get him back as a starter next season.
