Matheny 'anxious' to hear MRI results on Molina's thumb

The St. Louis Cardinals' victory on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs salvaged the final game of the series, but it wasn't without one potentially big cost.

Catcher Yadier Molina caught outfielder Jason Heyward's strong throw for a game-saving double play in the eighth inning, but Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo stepped on Molina's glove while sliding into home plate, injuring his left thumb in the process.

Molina, a fierce competitor willing to play through just about anything, finished the inning before being removed in the ninth.

After the game, it was announced that Molina will have an MRI on his thumb on Monday. Manager Mike Matheny told MLB.com's Jennifer Langosch that he is 'concerned' about Molina's condition, as well as 'anxious' to hear the results of the MRI.

"It hurts a little bit," Molina told Langosch of his thumb after Sunday's game.

Obviously, the Cardinals wouldn't be happy about losing Molina for any period of time, especially with so few games left before the postseason begins.
