Freeman injures thumb in fall league

Published Oct. 19, 2010 10:15 a.m. ET

Braves rookie first baseman Freddie Freeman hurt his left thumb Monday while sliding in an Arizona Fall League game. The initial diagnosis was a sprain, but more should be known after a thorough examination today.

Freeman, 21, was hurt sliding into third base on a triple for the Phoenix Desert Dogs during their 6-3 loss to the Peoria Saguaros. He left the game after his only at-bat.

Through five AFL games, he was 2-for-16 (.125) with a double, a triple and one RBI.

The Braves are planning for Freeman to be their regular first baseman in 2010. He hit .319 with 35 doubles, 18 home runs and 87 RBIs in 124 games this season for Triple-A Gwinnett, with an .898 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

Freeman, the International League rookie of the year, got his first major league call-up in September and went 4-for-24 (.167) with a double and a homer in 20 games for Atlanta. His homer was a mammoth shot off Philadelphia Phillies ace Roy Halladay.
