Dodgers' Martin on DL with hip injury
Dodgers catcher Russell Martin was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday for the first time in his career because of a hip injury he sustained in Tuesday night's victory over the San Diego Padres.
The two-time All-Star, hitting .248 with five homers and 26 RBIs in 97 games, tried to score after tagging up on a flyball to center field by Jamey Carroll in the second inning after doubling home the Dodgers' only runs in their 2-1 win. But he couldn't beat the one-hop throw from Chris Denorfia and was tagged out by Nick Hundley after coming in standing up.
An MRI revealed that Martin had a tear of the labrum in his right hip. The Dodgers recalled catcher A.J. Ellis from Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day, not knowing the full extent of Martin's injury.
