In response to the increasing controversy surrounding the Confederate flag, Bubba Watson announced on Thursday that he will paint over the one on the roof of the General Lee, the 1969 Dodge Charger from the 1980s series "The Dukes of Hazzard," which he has owned since 2012, according to a report from the Pensacola News Journal.

"All men ARE created equal, I believe that so I will be painting the American flag over the roof of the General Lee," Watson wrote on Twitter, adding the hashtag "#USA."

Reruns of the show, which aired from Jan. 26, 1979 to Feb. 8, 1985, were pulled from the TV Land lineup earlier this week. The decision to no longer air the program came in response to the backlash surrounding the flag in the wake of the shootings of nine African-Americans at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C., on June 17, and photographs of Dylann Roof, the suspected gunman, posing with the flag.

Warner Bros. also announced this week it would cease production of toys and replicas of the General Lee.

NASCAR and its race tracks issued a statement earlier this week requesting that fans refrain from displaying the flag at races.
