Vandy offensive coordinator has 'notions' about QB competition

After five days of camp, Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig has some "notions" about his team's quarterback competition, according to The Tennessean.

The Commodores played four quarterbacks last season, but coach Derek Mason has said that they will have a clear-cut starter and backup this year. The competition in camp has primarily been between sophomores Wade Freebeck and Johnny McCrary, who have been splitting snaps with the first team.

"They are both doing a very good job," Ludwig told The Tennessean regarding Freebeck and McCrary. "I have some notions in my mind, and we are just letting those guys compete and battle. We have a big scrimmage coming up (Saturday), and that’s going to tell a lot for all of us."

Ludwig added that the biggest issue in terms of determining a starter has been a lack of consistency among the two contenders.

"(They need) consistency, day to day and rep to rep,” Ludwig told The Tennessean. "Right now, we’re a little up, a little down, and it’s not always the same guy every day. We preach consistency, so we’ve got to start getting that."

Mason, during his availability, told reporters that he hopes to be close to a decision in about a week.

"At the end of 12 practices, 12 days, 12 installs, we’ll have a pretty good idea of where these guys will sit," Mason told the media.
