Two Former Miami Hurricanes Added to Butch Davis' FIU Staff
New Florida International Head Coach Butch Davis has Added Former Miami Hurricanes Assistant Coach and Wide Receiver Kevin Beard and Former UM Defensive Lineman Kenny Holmes to his Staff.
Beard joins the Golden Panthers staff after a season as the Offensive Quality Control Coach of Wide Receivers in Kirby Smart’s first season as Head Coach at Georgia. Smart succeeded current Miami Head Coach Mark Richt as the Head Coach of the Bulldogs.
Beard spent two seasons on the Hurricanes staff under Al Golden and Larry Scott. He was the Hurricanes’ assistant director of football operations in 2014 and the Wide Receivers coach in 2015. Before coaching at UM, Beard was an assistant at University High School in Davie.
Beard played for the Hurricanes from 1999-2003. He had his best season as a sophomore for the 2001 National Champions. Beard finished the season with 25 receptions for 409 yards and two touchdowns. Those were his career highs in receptions, yards and yards per catch at Miami. Beard played four seasons professionally in the Arena League.
Beard was at UM as a player for two years under Davis. When announcing the hiring, Davis said of Beard:
“I’m excited to have Kevin Beard join the FIU coaching staff…I’ve known Kevin since he was in high school. He is a great person, who is full energy and loves the game. He is a tremendous recruiter and is well known in the South Florida area. He also is driven to be an outstanding coach and has a proven track record as a teacher on the field.”
Current Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Rashawn Scott had his best collegiate season under Beard. Scott finished the 2015 season with 52 receptions for 695 yards and five touchdowns.
Holmes spent four seasons with the Hurricanes before being selected as the 18th pick in the 1997 NFL Draft by Tennessee. He played seven seasons in the NFL with Tennessee and the New York Giants. He recorded 249 tackles and 38.5 sacks in 98 career games.
Holmes played nine games with the Giants in 2003 before retiring. He was a part of the Titans 1999 AFC Championship team. Holmes joins Davis’ staff after two years as the Defensive Line Coach at Idaho under Louisville Coach Bobby Petrino’s brother Paul.
Holmes helped Aikeem Coleman become one of the best Defensive Lineman in the Sun Belt Conference. He finished third in the conference with eight sacks and 12th with 11 tackles for loss. The Vandals finished fourth in the Sun Belt as a team with 23 sacks.
Appalachian State, who the Hurricanes defeated 45-10 in Boone, NC this season is also a member of the Sun Belt.
