Top 5 FSU Football Players All Time From Miami

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Here’s a look at the five best FSU football players who hail from the city of Miami.

Fans of the Miami Hurricanes, for much of the last three decades, have loved to talk about what they think is the “State of Miami”. The notion that players from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties are all going to attend school in Coral Gables has been prevalent in both good times and bad.

For the most part, most schools have been able to come into the area and only get a handful of players to leave South Florida. That is, with one big exception: the Florida State Seminoles.

Dating back to the early years of legendary former head coach Bobby Bowden, FSU football has been able to go into the tri-county area and take more than their share of top talent and get them to Tallahassee – with many being used to beat the ‘Canes.

While there is plenty of talent that has come from all three counties, we’re going to focus on Miami-Dade County, since the Seminoles will be there this weekend looking to make it seven in a row over their rivals – so here are the five best players to wear the garnet and gold that hail from the 305.

No. 5 – Devin Bush (Safety / 1992-1994)

High School: Hialeah Miami Lakes

When you look at the history of FSU football, to hear former defensive coordinator say that Bush was “the most complete player” to ever come through the school, that is some high praise. Bush was a part of the first three ACC championships in program history, as well as the first national title FSU won in 1993. Bush is always going to be remembered for his pick six interception return against the Hurricanes during that championship season, the first win for the Seminoles over their rivals in the decade.

No. 4 – Devonta Freeman (Running Back / 2011-13)

High School: Miami Central

When he was running for the Rockets during his high school tenure, FSU coaches were smiling from ear to ear knowing that Freeman was going to be heading to Tallahassee (ironically, thanks in part to being told to go to FSU by legendary Miami booster and former rapper Luther Campbell). Freeman was part of a triple threat at running back with James Wilder Jr. and Karlos Williams, but was still the leading rusher during his time – including a season over 1,000 yards during the national title season in 2013 that also included several touchdowns against the ‘Canes.

No. 3 – Andre Wadsworth (Defensive Tackle-End / 1994-1997)

High School: Florida Christian

Out of high school – where he was actually a tight end – Wadsworth was only recruited by one school (Stony Brook in New York City). He decided to walk on at Florida State and switched over to the defensive side of the ball. The rest, as they say, was history. Wadsworth ended up his career in 1997 with a 16-sack season after moving from tackle to end, making him an All-American and the ACC Player of the Year (in a year that included a 47-0 beat down of the ‘Canes). He would end up being drafted third overall in the NFL Draft, the highest in program history until Jameis Winston was taken top overall in 2015.

No. 2 – Dalvin Cook (Running Back / 2014-Present)

High School: Miami Central

The third time was the charm for this former prep star in the 305, who was committed to both Clemson and Florida before deciding he wanted to be a part of the right program. Cook has made the most of his time in Tallahassee, becoming the school’s single season rushing leader with nearly 1,700 yards last season. His time with the ‘Noles has also included some great games over the ‘Canes, including over 200 yards in 2015 and two touchdowns as a freshman the year before.

No. 1 – Marvin Jones (Linebacker / 1990-1992)

High School: Miami Northwestern

The next in a family line that came from South Florida to Tallahassee (one that continues today with his nephew), the man they called “Shade Tree” was the first in a line of great linebackers to play for the Seminoles. Jones was a two-time consensus All-American, as well as a winner of the Butkus and Lombardi awards during his junior season (which included finishing in the top 10 of the Heisman voting). He would go on to a solid NFL career after finishing his time in Tallahassee as the top player to come out of Miami.
