The Numbers Game: when MSU scores 30 points or more
When MSU scores 30 or more points in a game the results are very good.
Considering the 28 point spread in favor of MSU vs. South Alabama in Week 1, you’d have to assume Las Vegas expects the Bulldogs to score at least 30 points. That’s kind of a magic number in college football and it’s no different for Dan Mullen teams.
Here’s the list of games in which MSU has scored at least 30 points, and the result of the contest:

In all, MSU is 36-5 under Coach Mullen when scoring 30 points or more in a game.
That means they are 19-30 when they don’t score at least 30 points.
It’s kind of a simple formula. Obviously the more points you score the more games you’ll win. And Mullen has a lot of wins vs. non-conference teams where he scores a bunch of points. But that’s just part of it – he’s able to rack up those points and those wins – something not every program in the SEC successful does like he does.
State’s only win vs. LSU featured 30+ points scored. The Bulldogs have never reached 30 vs. Alabama. Auburn seems to be the outlier from this group, as Mullen has beaten them twice without scoring 30 and lost to them once while scoring 30.
Look for that magic number of 30 this year. If MSU can reach it with a re-tooled offense they could be looking at a nice year. If not, batten down the hatches.
