Syracuse Football: Dino Babers is the reason the Orange are 2-4

The head coach of the Syracuse football team Dino Babers has disappointed. And he deserves the blame for this (2-4) start for the Orange.

Read that and let it sink in for a minute. Now you are probably saying to yourself I am crediting him with our two wins. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. He is solely responsible for at least two of our four losses.

First I will let the naysayers out there have an opinion. But, going into this game we had two of the top receiving leaders in the NCAA! Yes as a matter of fact our senior transfer from Maryland, Amba Etta-Tawo, is still the leading the nation in receiving yards despite his dismal showing against Wake Forest and Eric Dungey is still 6th in the nation after putting up a buck fifty in passing yards as he fought both the Wake defense and that pain in the ass Matthew. All of this is true…

BUT. Anyone that watched the game realized that one of my previous articles points was driven home Dino loaded up the jet Fuel into the smart car and as we have seen earlier in the season even with the pedal to the metal it’s still a smart car. Dino is unwilling or unable to adjust his playing style to the situation. Yesterday’s game was impacted by Hurricane Matthew but that didn’t dissuade Dino from trying to execute his run and gun in a monsoon. Several of the drives set NCAA records for the shortest 3 and outs in history.

Wake Forest led the time of possession battle by ten minutes. This is significant when you realize that is one sixth of the entire game. Our defense was slipping and sliding in the water and wheezing for air. While Wake Forest was well rested only having to be on the field for less than one minute a drive on several occasions.

And when the Orange were able to sustain a drive Wake Forest took turns faking an injury allowing the rest of the defenders to rest. If you were paying attention on one occasion the medical staff, the ‘injured’ player, and a coach for Wake Forest were all smiling and joking as they walked off the field after the free time out.

Mr. Babers needs to recognize situational football. When you have a lead you can slow down the pace.  When you are dealing with tough playing conditions alter you play calling.  And here is the punch line of today’s article… Scott Shafer would not have lost this game. Boom I said it. He would have called for some ground and pound, sprinkled in some play action, and we would have walked away with the win. Dino may at some point be in the Orange Hall of Fame. But for now he needs to slow down and give us a chance to win.
