Sumlin: Don't compare this year's team to last season's team
Once again Texas A&M is off to a 5-0 start. Last season, the Aggies would drop its next three games after the same fast start.
With the SEC schedule heating up, will that happen again? Not according to head coach Kevin Sumlin.
“Everybody is trying to compare this season to last season,” Sumlin said Tuesday. “It’s two different teams.”
The Aggies coach is right. Kyle Allen is leading the offense, not Kenny Hill, the defense has been playing very well for much of the season and of course John Chavis is now onboard to shore up weaknesses that still exist on the defensive side of the ball.
“There’s a lot of people that played in that game last year that aren’t even on the field,” Sumlin continued.
“What we’ve done, from a chronological standpoint, immediately after that there were some changes in personnel. I think that’s probably the biggest thing that came out of that. There were some guys that were in starting roles, in critical roles, that were replaced.”
Winning the next two games will go far in the Aggies attempt to win the SEC West, but it won't be easy with Alabama coming to College Station followed by a trip to Oxford. If A&M goes 2-0 during that stretch, the biggest remaining threat on the slate appears to be the finale in Death Valley.
First things first, A&M has to avoid a midseason collapse that halted the early momentum of 2014. Winning against Alabama would be a good start.
