Sooner Football Stays Pat in Middle of Top-25
Sooner football remained mired in the middle of the pack in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings, covering games through Saturday, Oct. 22.
Oklahoma stayed at No. 16 after outlasting Texas Tech in a game of whatever you can do I can do better. Both teams put up video-game-like offense numbers, equaling each other with 854 yards of total offense apiece. The Sooners won the battle of the scoreboard, however, with a 66-59 victory.
It was far from an impressive win, however, and that is reflected in Oklahoma’s lack of movement in the AP this week. The Sooners did gain a spot in the Coaches Poll to No. 15.
The Sooners’ all-offense, no-defense performance in besting the Red Raiders of Texas Tech cost them in the ESPN Football Power Index. They dropped back one position, to No. 12, in the FPI, and their chances of winning the Big 12 football crown also was lowered, from 54.4 percent a week ago to 45.2.
Baylor and West Virginia, both undefeated at 6-0 rank ahead of Oklahoma in the two major national polls. Baylor is up to No. 8 this week in the AP poll and No. 6 in the Coaches Poll. West Virginia, which is playing the best of any team in the conference right now ranks 10 and 9, respectively, in the two major human polls.
According to the FPI projections, which serve as a measure of a team’s strength and a predictor of a team’s performance going forward the rest of the season, the Sooners are still given the best chance of winning the conference championship.
West Virginia, a winner over TCU this weekend, is given a 31.6-percent chance of winning the Big 12, 10 points higher than a week ago, and Baylor’s odds, according to the FPI, are listed at 17.1 percent.
Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, Washington and Louisville are the top two teams in both the AP and Coaches Poll this week.
