S.C. alum Dantonio deflects question on Gamecocks' coaching vacancy

Published Oct. 13, 2015 3:19 p.m. ET

With former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier resigning Tuesday, another high-profile head coaching job has opened up.

It surely will draw significant interest, considering conference affiliation and university support. In the upcoming months, many coaches will be linked to the vacancy.

One potential candidate is current Michigan State head man Mark Dantonio. Dantonio is an alum of South Carolina, playing defensive back for the Gamecocks from 1976-78.

During his time in East Lansing, Dantonio has turned a once-dilapidated program into a perennial power in the Big Ten. Dantonio has engineered four years of at least 11 wins. His career record at Michigan State is an impressive 81-31.

When asked about the job on Tuesday, Dantonio wasn't overly forthright with his answer. He seemed to dodge the inquiry, instead focusing on this weekend's game versus rival Michigan.

It will be fascinating to see whether South Carolina will indeed have Dantonio on its list of candidates.
