Report: South Carolina names sophomore Connor Mitch starting QB

Published Aug. 25, 2015 4:46 p.m. ET

The competition is over in Columbia, as the Gamecocks have named redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch as their starting quarterback, according to 247Sports.

Mitch beat out junior Perry Orth, redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia and true freshman Lorenzo Nunez for the starting spot and will take the opening snap against North Carolina on Sept. 3 in Charlotte.

The presumed favorite entering fall camp, Mitch came to South Carolina as a four-star prospect but has only completed two passes on six attempts for 19 yards in his college career. Steve Spurrier has said the true freshman Nunez will play this season, so don't be surprised when the Gamecocks rotate their quarterbacks in and out this season.
