Report: Michigan State loses reserve defender to Youngstown State

Published Jun. 23, 2015 1:09 p.m. ET

Jalyn Powell, one of the early commits to Michigan State's 2013 recruiting class, is set to continue his carer at Youngstown State.

MLive.com reports Powell asked for and received his release from the MSU program.

A former three-star recruit from Warren (Ohio) Harding High School, he would be able to play right away for the Penguins, who are an FCS program in their first year under the direction of former Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini. Youngstown and Warren are separated by less than 20 miles.

Powell began his career in East Lansing as a safety but moved to weak-side linebacker -- which is a hybrid safety/linebacker position called the "star" in the MSU defense -- late last year. He was set to back up returning starter Darien Harris there this fall.
