OU's Samaje Perine Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Oklahoma junior running back Samaje Perine has been named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Perine joins West Virginia safety Marvin Gross and running back Justin Crawford, as well as Barry J. Sanders, a kick-returner for Oklahoma State as Big 12 Players of the Week for the final weekend of the 2016 regular season.

With Oklahoma turning heavily to its running game on a cold, rainy afternoon and the bruising, smash-mouth style Perine provides, the Sooners’ No. 1 running back pounded the Oklahoma State defense for 239 total yards on the ground and averaged 6.5 yards per carry on 37 rushing attempts.

Perine was held to just 35 net rushing yards in the opening half, but his 66-yard dash on the very first play of the second half set the Sooners up for a go-ahead touchdown and a lead they never surrendered in a 38-20 Bedlam win that also clinched OU’s 10th Big 12 championship.

His 239-yard performance against in-state rival Oklahoma State  was Perine’s second 200-plus yard game of the season and the 15th time in his career he has exceeded 100 yards rushing in a game.

Perine is 83 yards away from breaking Billy Sims career rushing record at Oklahoma (4,118 yards).

The Sooner junior running back is the third Oklahoma player this season to be named Offensive Player of the Week in the Big 12 and the fifth Sooner to receive one of the weekly conference honors in 2016.

Dede Westbrook and Joe Mixon were previous Offensive Players of the Week, and kicker Austin Seibert was cited one week as Special Teams Player of the Week.
