It’s been a long slog back for Oklahoma football after falling out of the national rankings in Week 5 of the 2016 college football season, but the Sooners have returned to the top 10 this week in both of the major human polls.

After beginning the season at No. 3 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the Amway Coaches Poll, Oklahoma is now back to No. 9, up several positions this week after a weekend in which several top-10 teams fell by the wayside.

Texas A&M, which began last week as the No, 4 team in the College Football Playoff rankings, Nebraska and Florida all were ranked ahead of the Sooners at this time a week ago, but all lost on the road this weekend.

Nebraska and Florida dropped 12 spots, to No. 21 and 22, respectively, in this week’s AP poll. Texas A&M’s fall was not as steep, but the Aggies did drop three position in the AP Top 25, to No. 10 right behind the Sooners.

Three other Big 12 teams remain ranked in both polls, and Oklahoma will face all three in the Sooners final three games of the regular season. West Virginia is the highest ranked of the three, at No. 11 this week in the AP poll, No. 10 right behind the Sooners in the Coaches Poll.

Oklahoma State, which escaped with a narrow win at Kansas State on Saturday, is No. 17 in both polls, and Baylor, which lost for the second time in as many weeks and is the Sooners’ opponent this coming Saturday, is No. 25 in both polls after tumbling 12 spots, like Nebraska and Florida.

The Sooners finish up the 2016 regular season with games at West Virginia on Nov. 19 and back home in Bedlam with in-state rival Oklahoma State. Both teams are currently one game behind the Sooners in the Big 12 standings.

The top four teams – Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Washington – remained unchanged in both polls, although Clemson and Michigan switched places in the Coaches Poll.
