Mixon receives praise from coaching staff

Published Jul. 31, 2015 1:34 p.m. ET

Oft-talked about running back Joe Mixon, who has yet to play a down at Oklahoma, finally has some good news coming his way.

Mixon was suspended for all of last season, due to a domestic violence incident and then Mixon Tweeted last week he was dedicating 2015 to his "Haters."

But the freshman running back has new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley impressed.

"We've thrown a lot him and he's handled it well," Riley said to The Oklahoman. "He loves to play. He loves to practice."

Despite arriving in Norman, Okla., last summer, this summer is the first time Mixon has been involved with the team. He was suspended for a year from all team activities last July.

Mixon is a former-five star recruit. He was expected to compete for the starting running back spot a season ago. Now, he'll join a backfield with Samaje Perine, who led the Big 12 last season with 1,713 rushing yards.

"I know about his situation and what happened," running backs coach Jay Boulware said. "He's been very attentive to all the details and he's done everything I've asked him to do."

Practice starts Thursday for the Sooners.
