Miami Hurricanes Move Up to 10th in Both Polls
After a 35-21 victory at Georgia Tech, the Miami Hurricanes moved up four spots to tenth in both polls. The last time Miami was in the top ten, the Hurricanes lost to 41-14 in 2013 to Florida State in Tallahassee.
The ‘Canes get a big shot a redemption when they play Number 21/23 Florida State Saturday Night at Hard Rock Stadium, This will be their first meeting as ranked teams since the 2013 game when Miami was ranked seventh and FSU third.
Saturday is also the first time Miami is the higher ranked team. Miami entered that game 13th and FSU 23rd. Florida State came into what was then known as Land Shark stadium and crushed Miami 41-17. This was the beginning of FSU’s current six-game winning streak.
This is the fourth week in a row Miami is ranked. That is their longest streak they since 2013 when they were ranked for ten straight weeks. The 2013 team didn’t reach the top ten until October 13. They would stay in the top ten for three weeks. That’s when FSU knocked them out.
In addition to the six-game losing streak to the Seminoles, they have not beaten FSU at the Rock (LandShark, Dolphins, Pro Player etc.) since 2004. This ties the second longest streak in the series. Miami ironically won six in a row between 2000-2004. This includes defeating FSU in the 2004 Orange Bowl game. That was Miami’s last game as a member of the Big East.
The only streak that was longer was in the series was FSU’s seven-game winning streak from 1963-72. The did not play in 1965, 67 or 68. They have since played the series every year since then.
The Hurricanes season has gotten tougher with each game. They have outscored their first four opponents 188-44. They began with a 70-3 win over FCS Florida A&M, they followed that up with a 38-10 win over Florida Atlantic who only won three games last season and beat Appalachian State who won the Camellia Bowl last season.
The Georgia Tech win was the first ACC Game of the season. Now comes their first test of the season against a ranked team. After FSU the ‘Canes host number 16/17 North Carolina.
Looking ahead, closing out the month on the road at Virginia Tech and Notre Dame won’t be easy. Notre Dame has played below expectations, but they have an explosive offense. Virginia Tech is ranked 25th in the AP poll this week and the 32nd team (under teams receiving more votes) in the USA Today Coach’s poll. VATech is the last game scheduled against a ranked team.
