Miami-Georgia Tech Set for Noon on ESPN

As the Miami Hurricanes travel to Georgia Tech for their ACC opener, it was announced that ESPN will televise the game at noon et.

This will be Miami’s second ESPN appearance this season and their second game in a row on the mothership. The Yellow Jackets will be making their third ESPN appearance of the season and also will be making their second consecutive appearance.

The ‘Canes and Yellow Jackets return to the ESPN family of networks after their matchup last season was on the ACC network last season. They had appeared on an ESPN network station the three previous seasons. The announcing team has yet to be announced.

The game will mark the return of Miami coach Mark Richt to Georgia. He coached the Yellow Jackets rival Georgia Bulldogs for 13 seasons before being dismissed at the end of last season. His last game as Georgia coach was a 13-7 win over Tech in Atlanta.

Richt was 13-2 against Georgia Tech, including an 8-0 record at Bobby Dodd stadium in Atlanta. Miami leads the all-time series with Tech 11-10. Since joining the ACC Miami holds a 7-5 advantage.

The series has been one of streaks. The Yellow Jackets won six of the first eight meetings. Miami won their last non-conference matchup in 2000 season and first ACC game in 2004. The Yellow Jackets reeled off four in a row before five straight Miami wins. Georgia Tech ended their losing streak against the Hurricanes in Atlanta in 2014. Miami won 38-21 in Miami Gardens last season.

The Yellow Jackets are a difficult team to prepare for. Richt told the Palm Beach Post that the scout team doesn’t do the Tech offense justice. Georgia Tech runs the triple option offense. They rarely throw the ball, control the clock and when the offense is clicking have one of the best rushing offenses in the country.

Georgia Tech has finished in the top ten nationally in rushing offense the last three seasons. They led the country in rushing in 2014. They are 40 yards below their average of last season and down nearly 150 yards from their 2014 average.

The Yellow Jackets averaged 5.5 yards per carry against Miami last season on their way to 314 rushing yards.The Hurricanes offense has been very productive against Georgia Tech the last seven seasons. Miami has averaged 33.4 points per game in their last seven meetings.

This season, it is the Hurricanes that enter the Coastal Division opener with the dominant rushing offense. Miami is averaging 272 rushing yards per game. That puts them ninth nationally. Georgia Tech is averaging 216.8 RPG 36th in the nation.

Miami running back Mark Walton is averaging 133.7 YPG, good enough for sixth in the nation. Backup Joseph Yearby’s 85 YPG ranks 50th.
