Mauk suspension opens up opportunity for freshman Lock
This wasn't how Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel wanted to draw it up.
With Maty Mauk suspended for the South Carolina game on Saturday, the Tigers will likely be relying upon true freshman Drew Lock at the quarterback position. It would be Lock's first start on the collegiate level.
Some fans have been clamoring for Lock to be integrated even further into the Missouri offense. In limited time this year, he's gone 15-of-25 for 225 yards and a touchdown. While it's an admittedly small sample size, Lock has a higher completion-percentage and QBR when compared to Mauk.
Lock does have a chance to stake his claim as the starting quarterback going forward. He will face an inconsistent South Carolina team at home. There should be chances to exploit a somewhat shallow secondary with passes down the field. In fact, Lock's ability to drive the ball to all parts of the gridiron is what makes him potentially special.
Also adding to the intrigue, Lock will be going up against fellow true freshman Lorenzo Nunez. Like Lock, South Carolina's signal-caller will be making his first start of the year versus a conference opponent.
