Knight's seat at Big 12 media days figures to get mighty hot

People might assume Bob Stoops' seat is getting hot at Oklahoma. That might or might not be true. But there's no doubt quarterback Trevor Knight will be feeling some heat when he arrives in Dallas, along with the Stoops and linebacker Eric Striker, for Big 12 media days Monday and Tuesday.

Stoops will be tossed the obvious questions, about last season's disappointment, about installing the Air Raid offense, about his staff changes and, of course, about who's going to play quarterback.

And that's where things will get a little hot for Knight, OU's rising star at this time last year, but whose shine wore off last season amid inconsistency, crushing interceptions and a scary neck injury.

Knight will face the media representatives who cover the conference and is likely to be asked as many questions about his teammate and position competition, Baker Mayfield, as he is about himself. And those questions about himself might not be all that flattering considering the difficult season Knight went through as the Sooners' playoff hopes crashed in the form of an 8-5 season.

He'll also be asked, likely repeatedly, the one question he can't answer: Will he start the season under center for the Sooners?

Stoops certainly is not expected to give any hints as to the answer of that question either. Mayfield, who transferred to OU following his surprisingly strong freshman season as a walk-on starter at Texas Tech, has been the odds-on favorite to win the job by those whose job it is to read the tea leaves, party because of his familiarity running the Air Raid offense at Tech.

However, Mayfield is hardly the automatic for choice. For one, his health is an issue. OU recently revealed that he's suffering from shoulder fatigue. And with the start of camp around the corner, it's uncertain just how close to 100 percent he will be.

And then there's the fact that Stoops chose to bring Knight to media days at all, knowing it could be an uncomfortable situation for the junior from San Antonio. Could his presence be a message from Stoops that he still believes in Knight?

So the quarterback portion of OU's media session stands be the highlight of the day.

As for Knight, he might want have plenty of ice water at the table because his seat figures to get pretty hot.
