Kansas found important piece for rebuild in freshman QB Ryan Willis

Published Dec. 21, 2015 11:12 a.m. ET

Kansas football had a dreadful season as a whole, but there were still bright spots to be taken from 2015. Case in point: freshman quarterback Ryan Willis. After taking the starting reigns midway through the season, the Kansas offense had some pep in its step.

Willis was not Plan A, B or C under center for the Jayhawks, but he was a pleasant surprise and looks like he could be KU's quarterback of the future. Now, it's about protecting him and finding some weapons in the backfield and on the outside.

“I saw a kid that has a lot of confidence and an extremely talented arm,” offensive coordinator Rob Likens said. “He’s got a big-time arm and he’s very courageous. He embraced the situation instead of letting it get too big. He’s very, very competitive. He’s one of those guys when the game starts, he’s a little bit different than he is during the week -- in a good way.”
