FSU football came back from a huge deficit against Ole Miss to keep their undefeated record in Orlando intact.
Wow, what a game for FSU football. They overcame a ton of adversity in the Ole Miss game. The offensive line couldn’t block anyone, and Dalvin Cook was bottled up much of the game.
The FSU defense couldn’t stop the peewee team down the street in the second quarter. There were busted coverages in the secondary, and Ole Miss converted five of six third down conversions in the first half.
However, somehow the FSU defense forced four turnovers which provided the spark for the offense. An offense that scored 32 points in the second half.
We’ll get into our stars of the game for FSU football. The first will be the new leader of the FSU offense.
Deondre Francois
QB, Florida State Seminoles
Francois finished the game 33 of 52 with 419 yards passing and 59 rushing yards. He didn’t have any turnovers which was key in a game where the defense couldn’t get stops early.
Francois led an offense that averaged 6.23 yards per play, and converted third downs at a 50 percent clip.
Huge debut, and we believe the FSU football offense is in good hands.
Ricky Aguayo
K, Florida State Seminoles
The field goals were huge early on as FSU couldn’t find the end zone once they got into the red zone. Aguayo made field goals from distances of 25, 21, 40, 40, 44, and 30 yards.
He doesn’t have the same “umph” that his brother did when kicking it seems, but a make is a make and we’ll take them all.
DeMarcus Walker
DE, Florida State Seminoles
His strip sack on Ole Miss’s first possession in the second half seemed to turn the tide for the ‘Noles.
Walker finished the game with 4.5 sacks and was virtually unblockable in the second half. That total is almost half of the 10.5 sacks he had in 2015.
Jesus Wilson
WR, Florida State Seminoles
Wilson finished the game with nine receptions for 125 yards. That’s almost 14 yards per catch for a small slot receiver.
Wilson did most of his damage on short catches in the middle of the field behind the linebackers. It was a great adjustment by Fisher and Francois to attack there against a very aggressive defense looking to stop the run.
Derwin James
Safety, Florida State Seminoles
Heck, he tackled Chad Kelly with just ONE hand in the game on Monday night. However, his interception was beautiful in that he played the route like a receiver.
James finished the game with eight tackles (2 of them assists). He’s a man among boys out there for the FSU secondary.
Matthew Thomas
LB, Florida State Seminoles
Thomas finished the game with seven tackles(all solo stops), and a tackle for a loss. That tackle for a loss was a huge play where he snuffed out a screen play and crushed the receiver as soon as he caught the ball.
He did have a few lapses in coverage and had trouble shedding blocks a few times, but overall a solid effort in what is a rebirth for his career.
Dalvin Cook
RB, Florida State Seminoles
Cook finished the game with 91 yards on 23 carries. However, he had an inexplicable fumble that cost the ‘Noles four points.
He contributed mightily in the passing game too. Cook had seven receptions for 101 yards. That yardage is near half of what he had for the entire season in 2015.
Cook’s grade would have been slightly higher if not for the fumble. All in all, he had a solid game with very little help from the FSU offensive line.
Honorable Mentions
Logan Tyler-The true freshman kicker had an excellent game as well. He would have made the impact list had FSU been able to get more stops on defense in the first half. Ole Miss scoring so fast sort of made his punts mute unfortunately.
Tyler boomed several kickoffs boomed seven of his 11 kickoffs for touchbacks. He also averaged 44 yards on his three punts on the night. That’s right where Cason Beatty was in his final year at FSU.
Ryan Izzo-Izzo had a monster second half in the game. He finished the game with three receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. Two of his receptions came on the drive that gave FSU football the lead for good.
All in all, a big time win when facing tons of adversity. That should get you excited about this FSU football team. They easily could have folded after that first half performance.
