FSU Football: The Immediate Future of Travis Rudolph

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

FSU football’s Travis Rudolph has produced at wide receiver for three years. Now he must decide if his immediate future lies with the Seminoles or the NFL.

In mid-October of 2014 true freshman wide receiver Travis Rudolph introduced his self to the college football world. That night in a primetime game against Notre Dame, Rudolph hauled in six passes from Jameis Winston totaling 80 yards and a touchdown in a thrilling FSU football victory. The unquestioned leader of that 2014 receiving corps was Rashad Greene who elected to return for his senior season despite production through his first three seasons.

Fast forward to 2016 and Rudolph finds his self in a similar position to Greene in 2014 – stay at FSU and be the unquestioned leader of a talented receiving corps, or get a head start on pursuing NFL dreams.

FSU football would greatly benefit from the return of Travis Rudolph if he so chooses. Rudolph has received well-deserved praise off field, while continuing to produce on Saturdays. The emergence of sophomore receivers Auden Tate and Nyqwan Murray has forced defenses to take some of their focus away from Rudolph in the passing game.

The threat the young receivers possess has allowed Rudolph to flourish as he ended the regular season with four straight games with a touchdown – none bigger than the 46 yard strike delivered by Deondre Francois on third and 10 against the rival Gators.  Rudolph’s strong finish to the season earned him second team all-ACC honors.

Rudolph is a savvy route-runner who is more often than not in the right place at the right time, a quality that Jimbo Fisher covets in his pro-style offense. Rudolph’s polished skill-set at the receiver position compliments the size of Auden Tate and the game-breaking ability of Nyqwan Murray.

The value of Rudolph’s return wouldn’t be completely based on his physical abilities. Rudolph’s acumen for the position can only help the growth of the young receivers. If Rudolph elects to return, Deondre Francois could have one of the most balanced three receiver sets to work with in the entire country.

Travis Rudolph has a big decision to make. And while we don’t know exactly what that decision will be – one thing is for certain, Travis Rudolph will always remain a fan favorite in the eyes of the Seminole faithful.
