Cheers: Texas approves beer and wine sales at home football games

Beer and wine will now be sold at Texas Longhorns home football games, the school announced Wednesday.

New University of Texas president Gregory Fenves recently said he was in favor of expanding beer and wine sales to Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Those sales will start at Texas' home opener on Sept. 12 against Rice.

Texas experimented with beer and wine sales at other athletic events during a pilot program since early 2014. With input from Texas Athletics, UT Police and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, the decision was made to begin selling the adult beverages at home football games starting next season.

"Fan safety and enjoyment remains our number one priority as we work through the process of expanding beer and wine sales into all seating areas of the stadium," Texas athletics director Steve Patterson said in statement. "During our extensive pilot, we found fans and staff handled the situation responsibly and we had no negative issues or situations. We will continue to monitor the service closely."

Texas became the fourth UT System school — after The University of Texas at El Paso, The University of Texas at San Antonio and The University of Texas at Arlington – to serve beer and wine at sports events. Other in-state institutions offering similar service are the University of North Texas, SMU and the University of Houston.
