Chavis working on keeping the defense fun, yet focused

The Aggies have their starting quarterback figured out after naming Kyle Allen the starter but the real question for the season will be how much can the defense improve under John Chavis?
Chavis will attempt to revamp a defense that finished last in total defense, rushing defense and second-to-last in passing defense. The Chief apparently has a different method from his counterpart at Auburn, he intends to make defense fun in College Station.
“I broke into the meeting today. I didn’t walk in, I broke in, and I was on,” Chavis told SiriusXM College Sports Nation. “I was screaming how great it is to have two practices to get better. All of a sudden, they perk up a little bit. I’ve got to help that.
“We talk about leadership, but with these situations, that’s my responsibility, to keep them excited, keep them coming and keep them laughing. I want them to have fun, there’s no doubt about it. When you’re having fun, the work’s not nearly as hard.”
If the Aggies can field a competent defense this season, the entire A&M program will likely have more fun on their way to competing for the West title. Last season's results won't cut it for a team with possible playoff aspirations.
“If it’s not fun for me, I can’t make it fun for the players,” Chavis said. “When it’s not fun for me, it’s time for somebody else to do it, because I need to be able to give my players everything I possibly can for them to have the kind of success they’re looking for.”
