Can new OC Heupel help Mizzou's struggling offense?
Missouri's offense was putrid in 2015, to say the least.
The unit ranked No. 124 nationally in total offense -- averaging a paltry 280.9 yards per game. The offensive line was beset by inconsistency, running back Russell Hansbrough never appeared fully healthy, and the Tigers were forced to pin their aspirations of winning the East Division on a true freshman quarterback (Drew Lock).
While this perfect storm of disaster led to a 5-7 record, new head coach Barry Odom is hoping Josh Heupel can turn the tide offensively.
The former star quarterback at Oklahoma broke into the coaching profession shortly after concluding his brief professional career. After a one-year stint at Arizona, Heupel spent the next nine seasons in Norman on Bob Stoops' coaching staff. His responsibilities included coaching the quarterbacks initially -- before transitioning to a Co-Offensive Coordinator role for four seasons.
He then left to become the Assistant Head Coach/Quarterbacks Coach/Co-Offensive Coordinator at Utah State in 2015. The Aggies ranked No. 93 in total offense last season.
Heupel's track record developing quarterbacks is impressive. He's worked with the likes of Sam Bradford, Landry Jones, and Chuckie Keeton throughout his career. Lock should be looking forward to the expected tutelage bestowed upon the young signal-caller by Heupel.
