Baker Mayfield Named Davey O'Brien National QB of the Week

Baker Mayfield had a big day on the field on Saturday, and had another big day of Tuesday when he learned he had been named winner of the weekly Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.
While everybody in college football was talking about the record-setting performance this past weekend by Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes, Mayfield made headlines of his own on the field on Saturday, earning him the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week Award.
This is the third time in Mayfield’s time at Oklahoma that he has received the national honor. He earned it twice last season and was one of three finalists for the 2015 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.
Mayfield’s contribution in Oklahoma’s wild 66-59 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday was a career-high 545 passing yards, completing 27 of 36 pass attempts, and an OU school record seven touchdown passes. His 266.3 pass efficiency rating in the game also was a program record for players with 30 or more passes in a single contest.
The Sooner starting quarterback finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting last season. In his last three games (wins over Texas, Kansas State and Texas Tech), Mayfield has thrown for 1,281 yards and 14 touchdowns and completed close to 70 percent of his passes. His outstanding performance in the month of October has placed him back on the radar for the 2016 Heisman Trophy.
Through seven games this season, Mayfield leads the country in yard per pass attempt (11.02) and ranks third in pass efficiency rating (194.9), completion percentage (71.4) and yards per completion (15.45).
Mayfield grew up near Austin, Texas, in the heart of Texas Longhorn country, and walked on as a freshman at Texas Tech, starting seven games at quarterback for the Red Raiders. At the end of his freshman season, he left the football program at Texas Tech and transferred to Oklahoma.
