Woodson with 23, lifts Memphis over Houston 73-54

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Avery Woodson hit six treys and finished with 23 points, both career-highs, to help Memphis beat Houston 73-54 in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams Wednesday.
Woodson finished 8 of 13 from the field. Austin Nichols had 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks for his third career double-double. Trahson Burrell chipped in 12 points for Memphis (8-4, 1-0), which has won five straight and six of its past seven games.
Memphis led 37-35 at the break, and opened the second with an 18-1 surge to make it 55-36 with 12:53 to play, and the Tigers led by double digits the rest of the way. Houston missed 10 of 11 shots during the span.
Devonta Pollard had 17 points, Jherrod Stiggers 11 and LeRon Barnes grabbed 10 boards for Houston (7-2, 0-1), which finished 20 of 64 for 31.3 percent from the field overall.
