Wills leads Vermont past Mass-Lowell 61-50

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) Dre Wills scored a career-high 20 points to lead Vermont to a 61-50 win over Massachusetts-Lowell on Sunday.

Ethan O'Day added 13 points, and Hector Harold and Kurt Steidl 10 apiece for the Catamounts (11-9, 6-1 American East). Those four starters combined to go 18 of 29 as Vermont shot 54 percent and made 19 of 22 free throws. Trae Bell-Haynes, who missed his three shots, contributed six assists, five rebounds and four steals.

Jahad Thomas had 20 points, Matt Harris 13 and Chad Holley 10 for the River Hawks (9-12, 3-5). Lowell shot 32.7 percent.

Vermont led 31-25 at the half and pushed the margin to 10 two minutes into the second half, then went scoreless for 6 1/2 minutes. Harris converted a three-point play at 11:52 to put Lowell ahead 36-35.

The game remained close until the Catamounts scored nine straight in the last three minutes, seven from the foul line.
