W. Carolina 83, Appalachian St. 75

Trey Sumler scored 27 points as Western Carolina defeated Appalachian State 83-75 Saturday in the Southern Conference regular-season finale for both teams.
It was the fourth straight win for the Catamounts (14-17, 8-10), who got a superb all-around effort from Sumler. The guard made 9 of 16 field goal attempts, including 3 of 5 from the 3-point arc. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Forward Harouna Mutombo added 16 points and guard Keaton Cole chipped in with nine, hitting two treys.
Appalachian State (12-17, 7-11) had four players finish in double figures, led by Andre Williams with 15 points. Mike Neal and Nathan Healy scored 11 apiece and G.J. Vilarino added 10.
The Mountaineers, who lost their third straight, led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the score was tied 34-all at intermission. Western Carolina led by 15 with 3:47 left to win comfortably.
