UGA's Thompkins coping with ankle injury

Georgia forward Trey Thompkins, the SEC Preseason Player of the Year, will almost certainly miss the season opener and could be out much longer.
Thompkins suffered a high right ankle sprain early in a closed scrimmage and missed Thursday’s exhibition game.
"It’s still pretty swollen,” Georgia coach Mark Fox said. "It’s highly unlikely he’ll play against Mississippi Valley State, and he may miss significant time."
Georgia opens the season on Nov. 12 against Mississippi Valley State, but then the Bulldogs have dangerous games at home against Colorado and at Saint Louis.
"I’m not sure when he’ll be back,” Fox said. "It’s a severe ankle injury.”
Thompkins averaged 17.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last season and is the primary reason why some have even ranked the Bulldogs in the Preseason Top 25 despite finishing 14-17 last season and 5-11 in SEC play.
