Trembler hits Maui Invitational

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake centered on the Big Island was felt during a game between No. 8 Kentucky and No. 13 Washington at the Maui Invitational.

Tournament officials said there were no reports of injuries or damage at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The trembler, centered about 10 miles southwest the Maui resort community of Wailea, hit at 6:34 local time, according to U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck during a stoppage in play with about 6 minutes left in the game, shaking courtside tables and chairs and swaying the baskets. The game resumed once the timeout was over.

''I felt the ground shaking and the rim was moving,'' Washington guard Isaiah Thomas said. ''I didn't know if it was an earthquake.''

The quake, felt 100 miles away in Honolulu, lasted for about 5 seconds, but many people inside the gym didn't seem to notice, including both coaches.

''There was an earthquake?'' Kentucky coach John Calipari said. ''What was it on the Richter Scale? Aw, that's nothing. I thought you were going to tell me it was a 7 and the building would have shook a little bit.''
