Robert Covington scored 18 points and Patrick Miller added 17 as Tennessee State held off Alabama A&M 78-68 Wednesday night for the Tigers' fourth straight win.

Covington is just eight points shy of reaching the 1,000-points club at Tennessee State (7-6), whose seven wins are its most at the winter break since the 1994-95 season.

The Bulldogs (2-6) have lost five straight.

The Tigers, who led 22-9 early, opened the second half on a 9-0 run to lead 40-23.

Alabama A&M then used a 24-7 run to tie it at 47 with 8:50 to play.

Patrick Miller hit a 3 to spark a 12-2 Tennessee State spurt, but the Bulldogs got to 73-68 with 37 seconds left on two Green Hill free throws. Alabama A&M didn't score again as Tennessee State hit 5 of 6 foul shots down the stretch.

Casey Cantey scored a season-high 21 points for the Bulldogs.
