Tava's basket lifts Western Michigan to 67-66 win

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) Connar Tava's driving layup lifted Western Michigan to a 67-66 victory over Kent State on Wednesday night, snapping a three-game losing streak.
David Brown's 3-pointer got Western Michigan within a point of the Golden Flashes with 1:10 remaining. After Chris Ortiz missed a 3-pointer for Kent State and following a timeout, Tava drove the baseline and put in a spinning hook shot with 10 seconds remaining. Kent State's Devareaux Manley drove to the hoop but his shot missed as time expired.
Kent State had led since 15:47 of the second half and was up eight with 8:44 left.
Tucker Haymond led Western Michigan (14-8, 5-4 Mid-American), which shot 50 percent, with 17 points. Tava and Brown had 16 each.
Derek Jackson had 20 points for Kent State (15-7, 6-3), which shot 40.7 percent. Manley scored 18. Kent State made 13 of 31 3-pointers but was outscored 36-20 in the paint.
Kent State played without leading scorer and rebounder Jimmy Hall, who was ill.
