Stony Brook pummels Division III Merchant Marine, 103-32

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) Carson Puriefoy scored 19 points and Ahmad Walker added another 17 as Stony Brook crushed the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 103-32 in the season opener for both programs Saturday night.

The Seawolves shot 35 of 74 from the field (46.7 percent), including 12 of 29 from distance. The Division III Mariners were just 12 of 56 from the floor (21.4 percent) and 2 of 22 from beyond the arc and their leading scorer, Andrew Williams, had 7 points.

Stony Brook held a decisive edge on the boards (62-31), dished off 22 assists and collected a dozen steals.

The USMMA is coached by Steve Hayne, a 1,000-point scorer during his playing career at Stony Brook (1989-91).

The Seawolves now are 25-11 all-time against the Merchant Marine Academy. Stony Brook beat the Mariners 89-54 a year ago.

Stony Brook heads out on a three-game road trip beginning Thursday at Vanderbilt.
