St. John's beats NJIT 77-58 in season opener

NEW YORK (AP) Rysheed Jordan had 18 points and five assists and St. John's opened the season with a 77-58 win over NJIT on Friday night.

The Red Storm jumped to a 27-8 lead in the first 14 minutes and played even with NJIT the rest of the way, keeping their advantage between 12 and 22.

Chris Obekpa had 13 points and 13 rebounds, Sir'Dominic Pointer added 13 and 10, and D'Angelo Harrison scored 10 for St. John's.

The Red Storm shot only 2 of 16 from 3-point range, but held the Highlanders to 28.3 percent from the field.

Damon Lynn led NJIT with 15 points on 3-of-16 shooting. Ky Howard had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Daquan Holiday scored 10.
