Kansas assistant coach Joe Dooley, according to sources close to the situation, is not expected to return to East Carolina for a second head coaching stint.

Dooley, who spent four years as the head coach at ECU from 1995-99, was in negotiations with the ECU administration. However, he is expected to withdraw from consideration.

Dooley was 57-52 in four seasons at East Carolina after taking the job at just 29 years old, but he was let go by a previous athletic director.

Dooley, 44, then spent three years as an assistant at New Mexico before joining Bill Self’s staff at Kansas in 2003. ??

Now, the search continues to replace Mack McCarthy, who has been reassigned to an administrative role after three years as the head coach. McCarthy was 34-55 in his tenure, following up a two-year period in which Ricky Stokes was 14-44 overall. The previous coach, Bill Herrion, was 60-80 in his five-year stint.

Dooley won 17 games in each of his first two seasons at ECU before winning 23 games over the next two years. He was an assistant to Eddie Payne when he was hired.
