One game after missing all 11 of his field goal attempts, Fuquan Edwin scored 19 points, leading Seton Hall to a 67-48 victory over West Virginia on Friday night.
The victory enabled the Pirates (12-2, 1-1 Big East) to rebound after a 75-49 setback against No. 1 Syracuse on Wednesday night. Seton Hall won for the eighth straight time this season at home.
West Virginia (10-4, 1-1) lost its second game in three contests.
The Pirates also snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Mountaineers. Seton Hall had not won since Feb. 14, 2006, when the Pirates played their home games at the facility now called the IZOD Center in East Rutherford.
Edwin scored 11 of his points in the first half as Seton Hall built a commanding 19-point lead. The Mountaineers had a slight run to cut the lead to six, but could get no closer.
Jordan Theodore added 18 points and eight assists for the Pirates and Herb Pope scored 13.
West Virginia, which was held scoreless for the final 6:42, was led by Kevin Jones with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Darryl Bryant had 11 points.
After the two teams traded the lead three times and saw the game tied on three other occasions in the early stages, the Pirates took control by outscoring the Mountaineers 11-0 over a 5:44 span to take a 16-7 lead. Pope had seven of his team's 11 during that stretch.
The Pirates then kept the pressure on, using the 3-point field goal to their advantage, while playing solid defense in a match-up zone. Edwin's first 3-pointer gave the Pirates a 28-14 lead with 6:06 left in the half and his second trey pushed the lead to 33-16 with 3:09 left.
Freshman Aaron Cosby's 3-pointer gave the Pirates a 38-19 lead. Bryant then made his first field goal of the first half, a 3-pointer with just 6 seconds left, cutting the lead to 38-22 at the half.
The Pirates shot 50 percent in the first half, while limiting the Mountaineers to 25.9 percent shooting (7 for 27) at the intermission.
West Virginia crept back into the game on a Bryant 3-pointer, slicing the lead to 49-36, but Cosby nailed a long trey with the shot clock winding down, pushing the Pirates' advantage back to 52-36 with 11:52 left.
Bryant was coming off a career-best 34 point performance against Villanova on Wednesday - a game where the senior guard shot 12 of 23 from the floor. But the Pirates' zone defense kept Bryant on the perimeter most of the game. He misfired on his first six attempts and shot just 3 of 16 for the game.
Kevin Jones hit a straight-away 3-pointer with 9:59 left, bringing West Virginia to within 52-44, but Pope answered with a lane jumper off the glass that put Seton Hall ahead 54-44 with 9:30 left.
Aaron Brown canned a foul-line jumper that brought West Virginia to within 54-48 with 6:42 left, but Edwin countered with a put-back basket and West Virginia hurt itself with two straight turnovers. As it turned out, Brown's basket was the last points scored by the Mountaineers.
Theodore had a driving layup and Edwin a breakaway layup, putting the Pirates ahead 60-48 with 4:24 remaining.
The Pirates' tenacious defense stifled West Virginia, which shot just 32 percent from the field on 17-of-53 shooting.
