Josten Crow tied his career high with 21 points as Sam Houston State defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 72-47 in the season opener for both schools Saturday.

Jason Hooten won in his debut as head coach of the Bearkats. He had been an assistant at the school the past six years.

Crow also led the Bearkats with 13 rebounds. Gilberto Clavell added 15 points and seven rebounds.

James Allen had 12 points to lead Mary Hardin-Baylor, a Division III school.

Sam Houston took control with a 10-3 run at the end of the first half to go up 30-17 at intermission. The Bearkats outscored the Crusaders 42-30 in the second half.

Antuan Bootle came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds for Sam Houston.
