Southland Player of the Year Gilberto Clavell scored 20 points to lead No. 3 seed Sam Houston State to a 61-45 win over No. 6 seed Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday in the first round of the Southland Conference tournament.
The Bearkats (18-10), last year's tournament champion, jumped to a 9-0 lead and never trailed in eliminating the Lumberjacks (18-11) from the tournament for the second straight season.
Josten Crow added 11 points and Nafis Richardson scored 10 points for the Bearkats, who play Texas-San Antonio in the semifinals Thursday.
Eddie Williams paced the Lumberjacks (18-11) with 11 points. Darius Gardner added nine.
