A person with knowledge of the decision says Tim Welsh has been hired as men's basketball coach at Hofstra, The Associated Press reported.

The person spoke Wednesday on the condition of anonymity because the official announcement hasn't been made. The person said a news conference would be held Thursday to introduce Welsh.

The former Providence and Iona coach replaces Tom Pecora, who took the job at Fordham last week.

Hofstra lost in the second round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. The Pride finished the season at 19-15.

Welsh spent 10 seasons at Providence, leading the Friars to the NCAA tournament in 2001 and 2004. He was 70-22 at Iona with one NCAA and two NIT appearances.

Welsh worked as an ESPNU commentator the past two seasons.
