KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee basketball coach Cuonzo Martin has withdrawn his name from consideration for the coaching vacancy at Marquette, said a person familiar with the situation.

The person said Martin had spoken to Marquette about the opening. The person spoke to The Associated Press early Tuesday morning on the condition of anonymity because Marquette hasn't publicly commented on its list of candidates for the position.

Martin owns a 63-41 record in three seasons at Tennessee and led the Volunteers to a 24-13 record this year that ended Friday with a 73-71 loss to Michigan in the Midwest Regional semifinals. Tennessee reached the NIT in each of his first two seasons at Tennessee.

Marquette is seeking a replacement for Buzz Williams, who went 139-69 in six seasons at Marquette before leaving March 21 to take over Virginia Tech's program. Marquette went 17-15 this season to end a string of eight consecutive NCAA tournament appearances.
