Quarles, Saint Joseph's beat Norfolk State 70-65
Freshman Daryus Quarles scored 17 points and sophomore Carl Jones 16 to lead Saint Joseph's over Norfolk State 70-65 on Saturday in the Philly Hoop Group Classic.
The Hawks (1-2) trailed by five points early in the game but took their first lead, 20-19, on a jumper by Quarles. The Spartans (1-2) quickly regained the lead, but Saint Joseph's scored the next five points and went on to lead 28-24 at halftime.
Norfolk State never trailed by more than seven points in the second half and tied the game three times, the last time at 41 with 11:27 left. Todd O'Brien's layup returned the lead to Saint Joseph's and Quarles' 3-pointer capped a 12-5 run to make it 53-46 with 5:18 remaining.
Jones made 8 of 8 free throws for Saint Joseph's in the final minute.
Kyle O'Quinn had 23 points and 13 rebounds and Rob Hampton scored 19 points to lead Norfolk State.
