Moore leads Utah St past San Jose St, 61-33

LOGAN, Utah (AP) Jalen Moore scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Utah State past San Jose State 61-33 Wednesday night in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams.

Chris Smith added 14 points for the Aggies (8-5, 1-0), which made 11 of 22 3-pointers.

San Jose State was 6 of 28 from 3-point range.

Due to suspensions for violations of team rules, San Jose State had just seven players available. It used a zone defense and slow offensive pace to begin the first half and led 10-8 with 12:49 to play, before a four-point play by Darius Perkins sparked a 13-0 run by the Aggies.

Utah State closed the first half with a 14-0 run, including three-consecutive 3-pointers by Moore, and led 35-12 at halftime.

Daryl Gaynor II and Ryan Singer led San Jose State (2-11, 0-1), which shot just 15 percent in the first half and 20 percent overall, with eight points apiece. Ivo Basor had 11 rebounds.

Gaynor, who came into the game having scored 20 and 24 points in the last two games, made just 1 of 12 field goals in the first half and 3 of 18 overall.

San Jose State: Basor, a junior college transfer, has 32 rebounds in his last four games, including his career-high 11 against Utah State. His previous best was nine, set against Washington State on Dec. 21. ... The Spartans are 0-11 against Div. I opponents this season. Their two wins have come against Bethesda and St. Katherine.

Utah State: The Aggies have now won 15-straight against San Jose State and 25 in a row at home. ... Utah State has held each of its last six opponents to less than 40-percent shooting from the field and is 5-1 over that stretch.
