Draymond Green and Adreian Payne combined for 22 points and 21 rebounds to lead Michigan State past Texas Southern 76-41 in an opening-round game of the Spartan Invitational on Friday.

Green had his second double-double in three games, with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans (1-2). Payne had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Michigan State, which had started a season with two losses for the first time since 1976.

Omar Strong scored 12 points and Fred Sturdivant and Lawrence Johnson-Danner each had 10 for the Tigers (1-2).

The Spartans got impressive performances from two freshmen. Branden Dawson had a game-high 13 points, going 6 for 7 from the field. His former AAU teammate, point guard Travis Trice, had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench.
