Miami Basketball: Dewan Huell will not be suspended following arrest

Jim Larranaga and Miami basketball will deal with their new recruits’ arrest internally.
If the Miami Hurricanes are going to continue to compete in the ACC, they need all their players to be active and healthy heading into the season. They already were dealt a potential blow before the start of practice as five-star power forward and one of Miami’s top recruits in the class of 2016, Dewan Huell, was arrested for battery last Tuesday.
Despite the incident, head coach Jim Larranaga told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein that Huell will not be suspended for the incident, instead, the matter will be handled internally.
WINZ obtained a police report that has the details of the arrest and it certainly doesn’t look good for the Miami, FL native.
According to a police report obtained by WINZ, Huell entered his ex-girlfriend’s dorm room at FIU without invitation and discovered her hiding in the closet with another man. He then allegedly grabbed the man by his shirt and dragged him out of the room, leaving the man with scratches on his chest and neck.
It’s very surprising that the program has opted to make a decision on Huell this quickly. The criminal process obviously hasn’t played itself out and we’ve seen other teams (like Xavier with Myles Davis) wait to investigate more details.
Without jumping to any conclusions, it’s certainly not something that Miami wants to be involved in off the court. We don’t know what the internal discipline is, but if more details are provided in the near future, Miami could always opt to take immediate action.
On the court, Huell is expected to be a key piece to the puzzle for the Hurricanes in 2016-17. The power forward is ranked 28th in ESPN’s top 100 for the class of 2016 and is one of the most talented players that Miami has added out of high school in recent memory.
Huell is long, athletic and will run the floor with the best of them. He can operate successfully in pick-and-roll situations because of his soft hands, good touch around the rim and effective mid-range jumper.
His strength, post moves and ball handling is a bit shaky at this point in his development, but Huell is a player that can help make up for the loss of Tonye Jekiri down low.
Joining Huell in Miami’s 2016 class is five-star shooting guard Bruce Brown, four-star center Rodney Miller and 6’2″ shooting guard Dejan Vasiljevic. Without Angel Rodriguez and Sheldon McClellan, the ‘Canes will have to rely on Ja’Quan Newton, Kamari Murphy and Davon Reed for leadership, while Anthony Lawrence Jr., Rashad Muhammad and Ebuka Izundu will be role players.
