Maryland has hired Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon.
Turgeon was offered the job on Monday and accepted it that night.
"It was a very tough decision," Turgeon said. "Probably my best team coming back. So hard to say goodbye to players.
"But Maryland was too good of an opportunity to pass up. Tremendous area with so many good players and terrific support."
Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson tried to lure big names Jamie Dixon of Pitt, Jay Wright of Villanova and Sean Miller of Arizona to College Park in the wake of Gary Williams' retirement. He also, according to sources, reached out to Brad Stevens (Butler) and Mike Brey (Notre Dame).
Turgeon, 46, doesn’t have East Coast ties but has done an impressive job at Texas A&M the last four seasons -- and also had success at Wichita State.
Turgeon’s record in College Station is 97-40, and he has gone to the NCAA tournament each of his four seasons.
The former Kansas player is considered one of the most underrated coaches in America and is also known as one of the top X’s and O’s guys in the nation.
